IFN-[gamma] mediates [CD4.sup.+] T-cell loss and impairs secondary antitumor responses after successful initial immunotherapy
Article Abstract:
The status of [CD4.sup.+] and [CD8.sup.+] T cells after the treatment of tumor-bearing mice with immunotherapy is described. The results have shown that the interferon-[gamma] (IFN-[gamma]), which is required for initial antitumor responses, has short-circuited the duration and strength of the later responses by inducing death in the [CD4.sup.+] T-cell compartment, altering the CD4:CD8 ratio and impairing the subsequent secondary antitumor responses.

Differential regulation of antiviral T-cell immunity results in stable CD8+ but declining CD4+ T-cell memory
Article Abstract:
Differences and commonalities among antiviral T-cell response are delineated by enumeration and functional profiling of eight specific CD8+ and CD4+ T-cell populations during primary, memory and recall responses. Results indicate that CD4+T-cell memory might become limited under physiological conditions and that conditions precipitating CD4+T-cell loss might compromise protective immunity even in the presence of unimpaired CD8+T-cell responses.

Interleukin-10 determines viral clearance or persistence in vivo
Article Abstract:
Viral infection in mice that is persistent results in a significant upregulation of interleukin (IL)-10 by antigen-presenting cells giving rise to impaired T-cell responses. Hence, a single molecule that directly induces immunosuppression leading to viral persistence is identified and a therapy is demonstrated to neutralize IL-10 results in T-cell recovery and the prevention of viral persistence.
